As a kind of companion to Jen’s female Doctor post I’m writing this because I have started to question my loyalty to the show.
Would I like a female Doctor? No, I don’t think I would. Jen’s blog post highlights the need for more women behind the scenes, writing for the show and running it, which I’d be a massive idiot to disagree with. Also better female characters which has been sorely lacking. But a female Doctor? Just because you can have one, should we?
But that’s Jen’s discussion! Please do read it if you haven’t already.
What I want to talk about is why I still watch the show when I’m getting increasingly disappointed with it.
I stopped watching the show before it was cancelled when this bloody thing turned up:
Which was accompanied by some heartfelt swearing and an urge to throw my stupid little telly out of the window.
I watched the movie version in 1996 and mostly enjoyed it. I was keen to see what the revamped show would be like and have mildly enjoyed it. I worked for a year on the DWO Whocast, went to conventions and re-watched a lot of classic Who and had a great time. I also listened to many Big Finish adventures and thoroughly enjoyed them all.
Out of all that it’s Big Finish that have stood out as the best thing to keep me hooked on Who, I just wish I could afford to start collecting them.
In the 50th year of the show I’ve been left feeling rather deflated over the recent run of the series. I didn’t really enjoy it very much at all. So will I watch the special in November? Of course I bloody will! Even though by then everyone will know what’s going to happen and who will be in it. But I will watch it because that 7 year old version of me still remembers LOVING the show and would sulk like a demon if I missed any.
Do I love the show? Yes. But only because I feel like I have to. Like a surly brother perhaps.
Do I like the show? Well, I think so.
It sort of feels like visiting a favourite pub and having a rather disappointing pint. And some tourists walk in. With children. And the toilets are broken. And they’re playing the music too loud.
How do you feel about it?
